uga

Per the AJC:

Tents can come back at North Campus. Slightly bigger tables are also allowed – up to six feet long. And the celebrating can start earlier, five hours before kickoff instead of the four. But fans still can’t bring grills.

So less driving around town trying to find a place to park and more of this

The Death of UGA Tailgating

by nixforsix on October 11, 2010

How do you know it’s noon on Saturday? Georgia is kicking off. For the fifth time in seven games this season, UGA will kickoff around noon against Vandy on Saturday. This might seem like par for the course at a Big 10 school, but it’s definitely an unusual circumstance for an SEC team given the TV package. Combined with the basic outlawing of tailgating on North Campus, you’re almost lead to believe that Michael Adams corroborated with the SEC Offices and television networks to end Georgia tailgating once and for all.

The Red Black weighed in with their eulogy for Athens Tailgating before last week’s game

Tailgating in Athens had been on life support for the past year. With the decision to ban many of the most essential tailgating accessories from the University’s North Campus, the phenomenon was already in a crisis. Most saw tailgating fading fast, but nothing substantial was done to prevent the calamity.

It only took one last straw to flatline our beloved Saturday companion. It came all too fast.

If Michael Adams and the rest of the administration put tailgating on life support, Mark Richt and his 1-4 football team pulled the plug.

Most of you who have been to other tailgating sites or been on a college football message board have seen the following photo of what appears to be two UGA fans.

What you rarely see is the second photo that reveals that one girl is actually wearing a black Texas Tech jersey. Neither logo appears to be photoshopped. So what’s going on here? Are either of them fans or did they just grab matching red and black jerseys at the store? Are they an apartment divided? Do they make flags or license plates for that?

If you’re tailgating for the Texas/A&M game next Thursday on Thanksgiving or just looking to use some leftovers as part of your fare, we’ve got a couple of links and suggestions for you.

Beeriety has a post on pairing beers with your Thanksgiving meal. They also have a more general post on how to pair beer with food.

Turkey – Oktoberfest (Paulaner), Biere de Garde (3 Monts), Bock (Anchor Bock).

Sweet potato – Brown Ale (Newcastle), ESB/English Bitter (Fullers), Pumpkin Beer (Dogfish Head Punkin).

Stuffing – Rye Ale (Founder’s Red Rye).

Pumpkin pie – Dunkelweiss (Weihenstephaner Dunkel), Dopplebock (Ayinger), Cream Ale (Sam Adams), Pumpkin Beer (Dogfish Head Punkin).

Green beans/veggies – Pale Ale (Sam Smith).

Cranberry sauce – Lambic (Lindemans Framboise).

The Georgia Sports Blog made a Turducken for their tailgate a few years ago. A Turducken consists of a chicken that is stuffed inside a duck which is then stuffed inside a turkey. Read about the recipe and planning and the aftermath.

The Real Simple website has a recipe for using your leftover turkey to make Reuben sandwiches that you can serve hot by grilling over a campfire stove.

Turkey Reuben Sandwiches

1. Spread 4 slices rye bread with Dijon mustard and another 4 with Russian dressing.

2. Dividing evenly, top the mustard-spread bread slices with 8 slices roasted turkey, 1 cup sauerkraut, 8 slices Swiss cheese, and the remaining bread.

3. Pan-fry the sandwiches in olive oil until the cheese melts.

I’ve had beggars come by my tailgating spot. I’ve been given free stickers, koozies, and had my picture taken. I’ve had people try to sell me game programs and t-shirts. But this Saturday I came across the best entrepreneurial idea yet. This girl was walking around tent to tent selling cigars. I’d say after a few hours of drinking beer and football, 90% of men of men are in the mood for a cigar. She also had one cigar with the home team Georgia Dawgs on the label to seal the deal. Just a fantastic idea.
