Tailgating Beers need to answer to a different standard than your average beer of choice. We’re looking for something that you can drink a 12 pack of over the course of the day without losing your mind (check our ABV chart/price chart). We need a combination of availability and versatility. Something you can drink with fried chicken, chili, or a chocolate dessert. In sweltering heat or bitter cold. Throw an extra beer in your pocket and walk around campus or share your cooler full of tasty beer with new guests. These are the beers to have and share at your tailgate.
Shiner Bock – From the Spoetzel Brewery in Texas comes this no frills beer charting in at 4.4 ABV. This is an amber beer that’s easy to drink year round. Available in cans or bottles and in bulk. (Beer Advocate)
Bitter American – Billed as a “extra pale session ale has lower alcohol but all the flavor and hop aroma you”. Coming in at 4.4% ABV this is a good substitute for pounding IPA’s all day long. From 21st Ammendment Brewery in California (only in cans) but seems to have decent coverage on the East Coast now. (Beer Advocate)
Fat Tire – The flagship amber ale from New Belgium brewery. 5.2% ABV puts it a hair above a sessionable beer, but it pairs so well with tailgating food. Also, you can find almost anywhere these days which makes for a very good default beer in bottles, cans, and bulk. (Beer Advocate)
Stella Artois – Stella has been making a push in the US market for well over a decade now with draft beer in an iconic glass. For whatever reason, I seemed to constantly come across bad kegs of it for awhile and backed off. The bottles were okay. But when the cans went mainstream in 2012 this became a tasty and viable tailgating beer. Super smooth and easily shared with girls at your tailgate. (Beer Advocate)
Full Sail Session Premium Lager – The short stubby bottle will definitely stick out at the tailgate. You feel like you could drink these for 12 hours and never get tired of them. 5.1% ABV out of Oregon and sold mainly as bottles in a 12 pack. This a fun and tasty alternative to Bud/Miller/Coors etc. (Beer Advocate)
Yuengling Traditional Lager: We’re hitting all the bases here. Widely available in a ton of forms at a reasonable price. 4.4% ABV with enough taste to put it above the mega mainstream (no longer American) beers. (Beer Advocate)
The Minnesota Gophers pulled out a three overtime victory at UNLV on Thursday. Before the game the hashtag #vivalasgophers was unleashed on the world, and UNLV fans had some fun tailgating.
The ZBT fraternity and a possibly a loose affiliation with something called “The Rebellion” which a student fan group, converted Airstream Trailer in a great tailgating setup. The Local Fox Station did a good job of covering it.
FOX5 Vegas – KVVU

This appears to be a pretty solid keg stand

I hate DJs at tailgates and really everywhere

But these girls probably like them

On a cold damp Saturday morning, a bit of coffee and Bailey’s is a sure fire way to warm yourself up and add a bit of cheer. With Notre Dame and Navy kicking the 2012 season off in Ireland at a 9am Eastern start, I can’t think of a better drink to start the day than Irish Coffee. This also fits our requirements for being a good tailgating drink because of it’s sparse ingredients and easy mixing technique.
In the picture we used a with an optional lid. A pretty nifty addition to your tailgating gear since it works easily with both hot and cold drinks and doesn’t receive or transfer temperature to your hand. Plus it’s always fun to see what you’re drinking.
Irish Coffee Recipe
Ingredients:
8oz Strong Black Coffee
1.5-2oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 tsp Brown Sugar
Heavy Cream or Whipped Cream
Directions:
Combine coffee, Bailey’s, and brown sugar and mix until sugar is dissolved. If using heavy cream, pour over the back of a spoon so that cream rests on top of coffee. For tailgating in the wild, I suggest using a Reddi-Wip can to add to the top of your drink.
There are many factors that go into choosing which beer to buy. Depending on your station in life, it may just come down to what gets you the drunkest while being the cheapest. You may have a little more money and slightly refined taste buds, but not also shell out big bucks for a sessionable beer. Have no fear, we’ve compiled the numbers so that you can make an informed decision. Though prices fluctuate over time and from store to store, the relative value should remain more or less constant. As you may imagine, anything with Ice in the name or any other big domestic beer does pretty well in these terms. European beers and low calorie beers give you the worst value. On the chart below, the lower the Price/Alcohol Ratio number is, the more buzz you’re getting for less bucks. Do your own taste test, and decide which beer is the right choice for you.

We’ve mentioned our love of a travel bar before. But sometimes you need to be more portable or discreet. That’s where the Bar10der tool comes in. This all purpose bar tool features a bottle opener, corkscrew, channel knife, jigger, muddler, reamer, standard knife, stirrer, and strainer. Which should cover any type of cocktail you’re going to make out in the wild. The $50 price tag is a bit hard to swallow, but if you’re a hard core liquor person and always need a drink, this tool should serve you well.
