Hop Skip and Go Naked Punch Recipe
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008 Posted in drinking, tailgating recipes | 1 Comment »Well I’d have to say that the recipe for Hop Skip and Go Naked might just be the only manly punch I’ve ever come across. If it has beer and whiskey that’s acceptable to drink right? Seems like a good drink alternative for an early morning tailgate or a sweltering 90° afternoon in Aug/September.
Ingredients:
Six 12-oz. cans of beer
1 pint of Canadian whiskey
One 12-oz. can of frozen lemonade concentrate
2 liters of lemon-lime soda
Preparation:
1. In a gallon container add beer, whiskey and frozen lemonade (and optional lemon-lime soda).
2. Stir and serve over ice.
Tailgating Guide: The Georgia Dome
Monday, August 25th, 2008 Posted in tailgating guide | No Comments »There are few times a year when college football takes center stage at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta, GA. This Saturday August 30th happens to be just such an occasion. Clemson and bama will square off in an season opening showdown. When tailgating for Georgia Dome games you have to make a choice. Do you wanna have a traditional vehicle based tailgate or do you wanna try your hand at the urban tailgate?
Urban Tailgate: Stay at hotel near a Marta rail station. The hotels in Buckhead near the Buckhead or Lenox stations are ideal. When your at the hotel there are plenty of bars and restaurants within walking or short cab distance. Take the train down with a small disposable cooler, a flask, or a wad of cash. You can get off at the Peachtree Center station and grab your first beer at Hooters, Sidebar, or Ted’s Montana Grill or you can just walk through Centennial Park on your way over to the CNN Center and the festivities. You can also get off at the Five Points Station and transfer to the west line and get off at the Dome Exit. The CNN Center will be your home base for the pregame. This a large food court where several fast food restaurants serve 32oz beers for $5. Your welcome to drink them wherever you want inside the food court but taking them outside is beyond risky.
The CNN center also houses some more traditional sports bars and restaurants. Jocks n Jills and the newly opened Taco Mac are your traditional televisions everywhere sports bars. The other restaurants have televisions but I wouldn’t expect them to have ESPN Gameplan.
Also near the CNN Center is the newly opened Stats Sports Bar (sound) which is ginormous. It’s about the size of a ESPN Zone but without any space being wasted for non-television entertainment. They also have a couple of booths where you have a beer tap in your table and can serve yourself.
For past SEC Championship games there have been various beer stands outside of the stadium on the North Side between the Dome and the World Congress Center and on the East Lawn between the Dome and Philips Arena.
Traditional Tailgate: For the bama/Clemson weekend there will be major paving delays on I-75-85. So you’re best bet is to take Northside Dr exit on 75 (which is north of the delays) and follow that South directly to the Dome. Which is convenient because that’s where you want to park. Along the right side of Northside Dr. extending about a mile north of the dome are several private parking lots which are more than suitable. Personally I like to using the Yellow Lot on Jones Ave (click on campus .pdf) which is just on the north side of the Congress Center. It’s a big asphalt lot and I’ve used it about 20 times for Falcons and SEC Champ/Peach Bowl games.
Once tailgating, do whatever you want. You may want to pour your beers into a cup in the parking lot but I wouldn’t say it necessary. I would load all of your belongings back into your car before entering the game though.
If you have other questions please leave them in the comments.
Tailgate Haven: Organize your Tailgate
Monday, August 25th, 2008 Posted in tailgating guide | No Comments »So I just set up a page over on Tailgate Haven. It’s a free site that is used to organize your tailgate. More than anything it cuts down on the emails and confusion between different members of your party. Everyone signs up for a free account and accesses your private tailgating page. You can set up a menu and everyone signs up for what they want to bring that week. The site automatically loads your teams schedule and will switch automatically each week. Other features include a message board and the ability to upload pictures.
So basically it prevents you from sending an email to 20-40 people every week and the subsequent reply to alls where people try to figure who all is going to show up this week and what food they are bringing. I couldn’t be happier with this development.
Tailgating Rules: Jerseys
Monday, August 25th, 2008 Posted in Uncategorized, rules of tailgating, tailgatress | No Comments »Any of age male Drunken Tailgater shall not wear a jersey unless they are the relative or close friend of a player. Leave the jerseys for hot girls and little kids. Why? Because you look like a tool. That’s really the only reason necessary.

The Joy of the Cold Weather Tailgate
Friday, August 22nd, 2008 Posted in tailgating chronicles | No Comments »ChiTownHawkeye from BlackHeartGoldPants puts forth his ode to tailgating. Of course he doesn’t think much of tailgating in the sunshiny embrace of the Southern fall:
But I’ll be honest, I don’t even think tailgating the first couple of games feels truly right. Because the main ingredient in a good tailgate isn’t the food, it’s not the alcohol (although that is a close second), it’s the temperature. It’s seeing your breath. Proper tailgating needs to happen when it’s cold. When you have ice in your drink despite there being no chance that it will melt due to the temperature, because dammit, beer should come from a cooler with ice. Because a bloody mary or jack and coke have ice in them. That’s the way the drink is and you don’t change it just because it’s 40 degrees.
I feel a little sorry for tailgaters down south (Wait. No. Fuck’em all). They can have their “worlds largest outdoor cocktail party” or the like. Those poor bastards in the SEC, Big 12 South, south ACC…they think they know tailgating, but they’re really just standing around drinking. There is no difference to them between having a party inside or outside. They’ll never know the karmic rightness of needing to be drinking as the sun comes up in order to prevent dying of hypothermia (in all fairness, you’ll still die from hypothermia. You’ll just be happy doing it. That’s the difference). 4 layers deep in black and gold clothes. Seats that fit in September but won’t in November. This is the joy of being a fan.
I won’t discredit our early tailgating but the last two tailgates of the SEC schedule in November are often a lot more fun than the rest of the season. Of course the games usually have a little more at stake rivalry wise.
